Learn French Online for Free with TV5MONDE
Would you like to improve your French using authentic videos from the French-speaking world? TV5MONDE, the international French-language television network, offers thousands of free online exercises for learners at different levels.
The platform, called Learn French with TV5MONDE, uses television reports, interviews, cultural programs, music and current affairs to help learners practise real-world French. It is particularly useful for developing listening comprehension while discovering different French-speaking countries and cultures.
What Can You Learn?
The exercises are organized according to four levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:
- A1: Beginner
- A2: Elementary
- B1: Intermediate
- B2: Upper-intermediate
If you have never studied French before, you can begin with Première Classe, a collection created for beginners. It includes hundreds of video-based exercises covering essential situations such as introducing yourself, talking about your family, shopping, asking for directions, finding accommodation and discussing your daily routine.
More experienced learners can choose activities based on their interests and current level.
How Does the Platform Work?
Most activities begin with a short video or audio recording. Learners then complete questions designed to test listening comprehension, vocabulary and grammar.
The platform includes content related to:
- Everyday life and communication
- French vocabulary and grammar
- News and current affairs
- Culture and literature
- Music and contemporary songs
- History and geopolitics
- The wider French-speaking world
New exercises are regularly created from TV5MONDE programs. This gives learners the opportunity to hear authentic French spoken with different accents and in realistic contexts.
A free level test is also available to help users choose suitable exercises. Learners can access the platform through its website or use the TV5MONDE EDU mobile application.
Is TV5MONDE’s French Course Free?
The exercises and learning resources are available free of charge. However, the platform is primarily a collection of learning activities rather than a conventional course with live teachers, mandatory assignments or a fixed timetable.
TV5MONDE does not present completion of these exercises as an official French-language qualification. If you need a recognized certificate for university, employment or immigration purposes, you may still need to take an official examination such as the DELF, DALF, TCF or TEF.
